Green Computers

If this were to ever come into the market, I would be one of the first to buy it:

EcoGeek image.

I want I want!! Methanol fuel cells supposedly save about 50% power and are cheaper to make. Mmmm… me like pretty blue bubbly liquid…

Oh, and the EcoGeek Web site is pretty hot, check it out sometime!

Visit a Library near you!

We visited the public library here, and I was thinking about joining before we found out how much it was. Twenty euro! A year! And an additional one euro per DVD! Unbelievable… so please, go to your library and enjoy the FREE services!!

Speaking of libraries, I really miss my colleagues back at the Johnson County Library. They just ran a teen video contest for their “Big Read” program, and they have some fantastic submissions! We are stepping up our own services, such as gaming tournaments, but my own contributions have been continually hindered.

Libraries are good! Visit, enjoy, and support!

An Event Apart

I have the privilege of attending An Event Apart next week, and I am looking forward to it for the most part. This is exactly the kind of conference I need to visit to do the job I need to do, and the best part is I know most of the speakers and own their books!

From this I hope to take away some fantastic ideas for improving the Library’s Web presence. I already have some ideas and tricks up my sleeve, but hearing and speaking to the best will give me better insight. The biggest improvement is the search I am planning to build. The idea was kind of squashed at my previous job, but I have total control over this one. :D It won’t be as minimalistic as originally planned, but I hope to make it very interactive and seamless while maintaining accessibility and usability. The process has already been hard and long, but I am determined to get a content management system and build a high-end Library Web site and Web catalog. I really want to use VuFind; the interface is very simple and elegant, and the features just keep coming!

The trip itself I am not looking forward to. I just made a trip back to the States two weeks ago, and this time I will be flying alone for a much longer time. I’m going to be so wiped! And as soon as I return, I start twelve hour training days (twelve hours because of bad transportation options). Jet lag and computer jargon crammed into my cranium. Sadly, I can’t wait until May is over! :P

An Event Apart, here I come! :D

Green IT!

Oh wonderful days! A while ago I posted about Green Code, an idea I had that seemed a bit over the edge. However, I just saw Gartner’s “Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2008” and I quote:

Green IT. The focus of Green IT that came to the forefront in 2007 will accelerate and expand in 2008. Consider potential regulations and have alternative plans for data center and capacity growth. Regulations are multiplying and have the potential to seriously constrain companies in building data centers, as the impact on power grids, carbon emissions from increased use and other environmental impacts are under scrutiny. Some companies are emphasizing their social responsibility behavior, which might result in vendor preferences and policies that affect IT decisions. Scheduling decisions for workloads on servers will begin to consider power efficiency as a key placement attribute.

This is wonderful news! Thank you Tame the Web for the post.
