Resolutions

Welcome to 2008, a new year with a new life. Herr and I began the deconstruction of our current life, beginning with the walls. Our apartment is now a maze of miscellaneous piles spilling into walkways for ill-fated footsteps. My tummy is terribly upset with so much eating, my head hurts from lack of sleep and too many things to prepare/decide, and we are both experiencing a state of restlessness whilst trapped in such a hectic time. We will both feel much better once we have our permanent residence in Germany. Tomorrow is the disassembly of the computer and electronics, so no guarantee for the next post date.

As for resolutions, I surprised Herr with mine. I hope to write at least ten pages each month towards one of my stories. I have a strong feeling that our new lifestyle will help stimulate both our brains once again, and I think focusing on writing would be beneficial. Of course, better dietary responsibility was quickly added (I don’t think it will be problematic in Germany, but some “and world peace” addition seemed necessary). Herr’s resolution: to be more financially responsible through education and practice.

And let the year of the Rat begin! Well, at the end of February at least. ;-)

Christmas!

Herr and I had a good yet busy Christmas this year. Sunday night we had a chili dinner and entertainment with Herr’s brother and family and friends. Monday we spent cooking food for Christmas Eve dinner. I couldn’t get the recipes right, so things tasted a bit off for me. It was interesting to have 11 people in our small 900 square foot apartment, but it was still surprisingly comfortable. I determined Herr and I need to work on our hosting skills. We can cook and prepare and take care of everything, but actually hosting is something we still need work on. After everyone left we opened our first few gifts from my family. Herr loves his Dremel wood precision tool. We have some Pyrex bowls from my parents, which will be very useful with most of the Tupperware gone now!

Christmas Day was spent at Herr’s brother and sister-in-law’s house with four dogs and twelve people. Crazy! It took over three hours to open gifts. This was the year of tea. Herr received a tea press with loose leaf teas from me. Then he received lots of flavored tea bags and a tea pot from his brother and sister-in-law. Today we picked up a tea kettle with whistle to complete the tea collection. ;-) We are set for any type of tea! We have some new scents as well. Wood zen scents from my parents and lavendar scents from Herr’s sister-in-law. The rail in Europe materials from Herr’s uncle are terrific! We plan on taking rail to most places we go.

We received many things this year; people were very generous! This was a good Christmas with lots of food (we have a TON of leftovers!) and interesting conversation. I’m glad people seemed generally happy with the cooking. :P

To Germany

I have accepted a new position as a Web and Systems Librarian in Germany. We’ll be leaving at the beginning of the new year, so there’s still enough time to wrap up projects and our life here. Of course, this is a bit of a change… and I have a lot to figure out and learn. I have already decided that I will learn German and refresh my French. Once I am speaking German well enough, I will find a cello tutor and refresh my skills with that as well.

Herr and I are both excited to live in a new culture and experience all the wonders of Europe. We’ve considered spending our first anniversary together in Paris. I’ve considered spending some time in the Swiss Alps to get my snow fix… Herr will also be able to find a good full time job and practice his German skills.

The position itself will be filled with learning and creating. The library has a lot of tools they want to implement, and I have a lot of ideas about how to implement them. :-D It was a hard decision for me to make though. The people I work with now are awesome and willing to try new ideas. Next year they have some fun projects to work on, which I’ll have to now pass up. I do hope they’ll keep in contact with me and have me kind of as a consultant so I can kind of be involved. ;-) So much to think about though! A little scary and exciting at the same time.

Giving thanks

We’ve had a busy week. My good friend visited us last Sunday and stayed through to Tuesday morning. Wednesday I ended up going to see the chiropractor. Didn’t help, sadly, but at least I’m level again. :-D My relatives came down on Thursday for Thanksgiving. We made Parsley and Thyme Crusted Leg of Lamb, Mashed Potatoes and Apples with Thyme, Cranberry Applesauce, broccoli, Garlic Knot Rolls, and Pumpkin Pie. With four of us, we had plenty of leftovers to munch on for the next few days. :-) To help the food settle, we went to the Plaza to see the lights turn on. It has been chilly, so we didn’t stay long. Despite the cold and a man’s really disgusting cigar stinking up the area, the lights and fireworks show were a fun addition to Thanksgiving.

On Friday, we took down the autumn decorations and pulled out winter decorations. We have a tree up and a gum drop town all lit up. I treated everyone to Jun’s, a great sushi restaurant in the area. We had mochi balls for dessert even, but wow do I feel stuffed! Two big restaurant meals and Thanksgiving with leftovers… I need a major diet or exercise plan. Good eats though, and good company. :-) I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!
